Driven by supporting the local community, Simon Webster Hair redefines what a salon can do – and be.
At aged 15, Simon Webster started as a Saturday boy at a local hairdresser. By 21, he’d already become an original L’Oreal ID artist. Since then, he’s developed his skills around the world: hairdressing in editorials, fashion weeks and salons. Galvanised by Simon’s 35-year industry experience, Sophie Webster and Simon Webster founded Simon Webster Hair.
Their family-run independent salon specialises in creative, gender-free styling and colouring. SWH opened in 2012, and by 2013 were already proud winners of UK Ultimate Salon Award and Best Newcomer. They have a serious catalogue of awards and nominations, which you can see more about here.
Though SWH have always implemented annual wage rises, becoming an accredited Living Wage employer removed any doubt from the team how long that could be maintained.
Sophie Webster of SWH states that: ‘Being a Living Wage employer means you are contributing to your community as well as your team. It undoubtedly attracts more experienced staff to your business, but it also sends a strong message to your clients that you take the welfare of your team seriously – and that gives them greater confidence in your business.’
She goes on to encourage other employers to sign up ‘There’s a lot of economic instability at the moment and it’s important for your team to know that their wellbeing is important to you. Team stability and happiness is central to the success of any business. Any investment you make is paid back in increased loyalty, a stronger network and improved customer experience as a result.’
SWH recognises that traditional misconceptions around hairdressing are that it’s under-valued and maligned. But nothing could be further from the truth. Being a Living Wage employer exemplifies SWH’s professionalism and the consistent high-quality service they provide. They’ve pushed the boundaries of what a salon can be, and being a Living Wage employer is part of that.
