Why did UnBarred join the Brighton & Hove Living Wage Campaign?

UnBarred’s journey began in the shed of its founder and Head Brewer, Jordan Mower. In 2014 Mower had a passion to brew uncompromising and exciting beer. Since then, their original flagship IPA has won the Bev Robbins Award for the Best Sussex Beer. They quickly outgrew the shed and moved onto gypsy brewing. Now, they collaborate with other breweries to create core and limited editions that embody their core values – creativity, passion, and freedom.

Brett Preston of Unbarred says they joined the campaign because ‘we think it shows our commitment to our employees and future employees in terms of pay and support for the team while keeping things fair and equal.’ He emphasizes the importance this will have ‘when recruiting for staff and demonstrating our commitment to the living wage and good working conditions.’

Since establishing their taproom and brewery in the heart of Brighton in August 2019, they have doubled their production and embrace the Brighton community. Preston highlights the importance of working ‘with local artists, independent businesses and fellow-creatives to showcase the best of the vibrant culture and boundless innovation of this beautiful city.’ He says Unbarred are ‘committed to quality in all aspects of our organisation this includes our teams experience, working balance, pay and benefits. It felt right to join our local living wage campaign and support it as best as we can.’

Unbarred Brewery encourages other employers to push for a good work life balance and to pay their staff fairly.
